Tryouts are a challenging situation
for both player and coach, but can also be exciting as the player has an opportunity to demonstrate his skill level and attitude
in at least four hours of competitive basketball. All players will be observed by at least three coaches, and get multiple
repetitions to pass, shoot, dribble, defend, and shoot the basketball, and prove that they belong on one of the teams, freshmen,
Junior Varsity, and Varsity.
TRYOUT SCHEDULE
Monday 11/30- all players in grades
9-12 will participate in a tryout from 3-5 in the Middle School Gym. All candidates needed to have attended the 11/23
team meeting, including submitting all paperwork in a timely manner. Players should be ready by 2:30pm.
Freshmen-unless otherwise instructed by a coach, all freshmen will continue
tryouts on Tuesday and Wednesday, from 5:30-7pm in the Marcoux Gym. Following the third tryout, all players will report
right after school Thursday, 12/3, in the Middle school Team Room to find out what team they will be assigned to, or if they
made the team. This will be dealt with the utmost respect for the player, as we understand this a delicate process.
Tuesday 12/1-All players in grades 9-12 will report to the Middle School
Gym for the second and final tryout, unless indicated by the Coaching Staff, from 3-5. At the conclusion of this practice,
all players should expect to put aside 30 minutes to be informed of the status of which team they will play for, or if they
made the team. This will be dealt with, again, very respectfully and in person. Coaches will try their best
to articulate their objective decisions concerning the teams that they have selected.
Tryout Criteria: In no specific order of importance, here are the
criteria for making the team:
1. Skill Level: How well does the player pass, shoot, dribble, rebound
and defend the basketball? Does he competently demonstrate that all skill areas are ones he has been working on?
Does he possess superior skills in one or more areas, making him a valuable addition to the program? Is he a quick learner,
grasping more complex concepts as practice moves ahead?
2. Conditioning: Can the player continue playing at a high level, despite
the practice intensity increasing? Is the player visibly under stress due to increased running and movements? Has the
player clearly demostrated that he has prepared sufficiently for the season?
3. Attitude: Can the player make a mistake and move on, or does he let
others know that he made a mistake and hold it or has an outburst? Does the player show up early, and give praise to
his teammates? Does the player's body language suggest that he is dependable and a good teammate, and does he listen
attentively to the coaches during instructional time?
4. Academics: Are the players grades passing? Does he show a willingness
to improve his grades? Is he competitive in the classroom as he is on the court? Note: We will address each players
report card that was received on 11/17/09.
5. Standing in the Community: Is the player a solid citizen in his
community? Does he work hard to be a role model for younger student-athletes? Has he been in trouble with the local authorities,
or is he a dependable young man?
Chain of Communication: Any player who disagrees with a Coaching decision
regarding making the teams, is strongly encouraged to deal with it responsibly, as a young man, by himself. Time
will be allotted that eveing (12/2/09-5-5:30) to discuss this matter, or the next day at 2:30 in the team room. Please
make note to make an appointment with the coach.
The Coaches will not meet with any parent unless this first step is taken by the player.
If the player is still dissatified, his parent/guardian can request a meeting by contacting
the coach directly, not the Athletic Director or Principal, the next day or evening (12/3/09).
If a coach feels that a player offers a compelling reason for another tryout to be granted,
the coaches will tell the player that evening (12/2). If the coaches do not feel an additional tryout is necessary,
they will inform the player that night (12/2), and the player can have the parent/guardian make an appointment for the next
day (after discussion of the matter), and the coach will accomodate that parent.
Every effort will be made to come to a compromise, however, if the coaching staff feel
that their decisions are final, no concessions will be made for adding players to any team.
GOOD LUCK IN TRYOUTS,
RED RAIDERS!
